Visiting London Day 1: Explore Central London

Morning: The Tower of London and Tower Bridge

Everyone has heard of the Tower of London , so much so, in fact, that it was voted one of the top 10 must-see attractions in France. But what exactly is the Tower of London? It’s a fortress located on the banks of the Thames that was once a prison where most of the prisoners were executed . It’s a fantastic historical visit if you want to learn more about London’s history.

If you don’t want to start your trip with stories of executions (which is totally understandable), you can also visit Tower Bridge . Start by taking a selfie in front of it, just to let your friends know you’re “in London, baby.” You can then go inside and walk across the glass walkway, 42 meters above the ground , visit the Victorian-era engine rooms, and learn about the monument’s history with an audio guide in French .

Evening: Sunset at the Sky Garden

To recover from your emotions, how about going for a drink with a view of all of London? Head to the Sky Garden , at the top of the Walkie-Talkie skyscraper (no, we’re not kidding… that’s how we say it in English).

The best part about the Sky Garden? You can go up for free from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 11 am to 9 pm on weekends! That’s right, all you have to do is book your tickets here . If you get hungry, you can also grab a bite to eat at one of its two restaurants. Otherwise, head downstairs to explore the neighborhood; it’s full of delicious places to eat!

Visiting London Day 2: Touring Historic London

We didn’t want to be too obvious by having you visit Buckingham Palace on the first day, but we’ll have to get on with it! So, for this second day in London, let’s head towards the historic center.

Morning: Buckingham Palace, Changing of the Guard and Royal Mews

Buckingham Palace, the changing of the guard and all that jazz, is it really worth going? Let’s just say it’s interesting to do at least once, especially if you’re on a week-long trip to London, you have the time.

Grab your coffee at the local Pain à Manger (you’ll understand when you arrive in London) and head to Buckingham Palace to watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place at 11:00 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. If you wish to visit Buckingham Palace, unfortunately, you’ll need to plan your trip to London for July, August, or September, the only months the palace is open to the public.

However, if you still wish to visit, please note that the Royal Mews are open from February to October, Thursday to Monday. You will then be able to discover the most beautiful stables in the world, home to Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, as well as an amazing collection of royal carriages and coaches.

LUNCH IDEA: You won’t feel like you’re in the UK until you’ve had proper fish and chips. Why not pop into The Laughing Halibut and try a good one? If you don’t like fish, don’t worry, they have plenty of other options!

Afternoon: Westminster Abbey and Thames River cruise

Once you’ve had your fill, head to a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Westminster Abbey . It’s one of the most important historical monuments in London, and indeed the entire country. The abbey has hosted numerous royal events throughout the ages, including coronations and weddings , no less!

Next, head to the Thames for an Uber Boat tour . The dock is located right next to Big Ben. We don’t recommend visiting Big Ben because the number of places is extremely limited, but still, consider taking a photo with the world’s most famous clock in the background – it’s always a nice touch.

The Uber boat is more of a means of transport than a tourist attraction, but with your day ticket you can enjoy stunning views of all the London landmarks located along the Thames, and hop on and off whenever you like.

Evening: London Eye

If you decide to disembark where you boarded, you’ll find yourself in the perfect spot to board the London Eye . Whether with family or your loved one, head to the Ferris wheel at sunset for a panoramic view of the city lights. You’ll have a clear view of Big Ben directly opposite.

Visiting London Day 3: Museums and shopping

Clearly, this day is what you’d call a “mix and match.” Why? Because with no fewer than four suggested museums, you’ll have to make some choices. The good news is, there’s something for everyone, so have fun!

Morning: the British Museum (or elsewhere)

Good morning! We’re off for another fantastic day in London! This morning, we’re starting with a productive stop: the British Museum in Bloomsbury. This free museum , open to the public all year round except at Christmas, is one of the must-see attractions in London.

Between Greek antiquities, relics of ancient Egypt, and archaeological wonders of the Near East , you’ll travel the world and journey through the ages on this unique visit. Of course, we suggest spending the morning there, but be aware that you could easily lose yourself for much longer! Just be careful not to get locked in for the night… Unless you’re Ben Stiller, the cursed Egyptian tablets and key-stealing monkeys might give you a run for your money.

If the British Museum doesn’t appeal to you, you could also visit the Charles Dickens Museum , dedicated to this giant of English literature, author of Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, somewhat the British equivalent of our Honoré de Balzac. Alternatively, you’ll also find the Postal Museum nearby, devoted to the history of the English postal service; it’s a museum as surprising as it is fascinating (there’s even a miniature train inside).

LUNCH IDEA: Fancy a hearty portion of fresh pasta for under £7? Then head to PaStation , less than a 10-minute walk from the British Museum. Afternoon: Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden

Another busy afternoon ahead! If you’re an art lover, we suggest a visit to the National Gallery , located in Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London. Entry is free, and you’ll find masterpieces by artists ranging from Van Gogh to Cézanne. While you’re in Trafalgar, take the time to climb to the top of the Great Fire of London monument . After ascending 311 steps, you’ll find yourself 61 meters high with a breathtaking view of London!

If you’ve visited enough museums for the day, we suggest you go for a walk instead. Since you’re already in the city center, several options are available. You could, for example, head to Oxford Street and Regent Street for an unlimited shopping spree !

You can also visit Chinatown and Soho, or simply head to Covent Garden . It’s also a great place for shopping and finding souvenirs. For example, you can buy English tea at Fortnum & Mason (the official supermarket supplier to the Royal Family) or find eclectic items at the Apple Market . However, don’t be disappointed; you’re more likely to find rotary phones there than the latest iPhone.

Evening show

The West End district, where Covent Garden is located, is also where you’ll find most of the city’s theatrical performances . The main problem for us poor French speakers is that they’re in English… Well, if you happen to speak English, take advantage of it to buy tickets and have an amazing evening.

Alternatively, we suggest a slightly risqué evening at the House of Burlesque . Of course, it’s not exactly family-friendly, but a speakeasy-style night can be a fantastic memory! Entry tickets start at £10, and you can even take a class if you like.

Visiting London Day 4: Exploring the Greenwich district

For this fourth day of your stay in London, let’s start with the basics. We know you’re really keen to read Green-Witche , but if you ask someone for directions to GreenWiTchE, even with your best (least bad?) accent, no one will understand you. Yes, it’s pronounced Greenitche . Hey, we can hear you complaining now, as if French were more logical. Do you want to remind us how you pronounce “eggs” or

Morning: Royal Observatory or Old Royal Naval College

This morning, we offer two distinct activities, depending on whether you want to have your head in space or your feet in the water!

Evening: Pub and Live Music

Morning: London Zoo

Did you know London has a zoo? Now you do! Located in Regent’s Park, London Zoo is home to over 20,000 animals of 750 species from around the world. Explore the different habitats, from the beach and penguin enclosure to the butterfly paradise, the lion enclosure, and the tiger territory.

Throughout the year, the zoo organizes themed events such as Halloween at the zoo or visits with Santa Claus. Then take some time to stroll through this vibrant London neighborhood and be sure to take photos of the oversized shop signs on Camden High Street. You could easily spend an afternoon wandering along the canal.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan but don’t have the time (or budget) to visit Universal Studios, it’s time for a quick detour to King’s Cross . Of course, if you’re coming from France on the Eurostar, you can start your journey there. Yes, the famous London station is indeed home to Platform 9 3/4 . Unfortunately, the Hogwarts Express only runs from there on September 1st. But you’ll surely find something to console yourself with at the Harry Potter shop , we trust you!

Evening: Sunset at Primrose Hill

It’s already the last day of your week in London and with the route you’ve just taken, you must be exhausted! For this last day, we’ll take it easy and head a little to the East of central London to blend in with the locals.

Morning: St. Paul’s Cathedral

Of course, if you know London, you’ve probably figured us out; we’re cheating a little because St. Paul’s Cathedral is more in the city center than in the East, but it’s our itinerary, so we do what we want. Besides, it’s only a 30-minute walk from our next destination, so we’re not going to overthink it!

In fact, we couldn’t let you leave London without showing you one of the most recognizable sites in the British capital . Start your visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral in the crypt where you’ll discover more than 2,000 memorials and effigies.

Then, it will be time to climb! You can access the nave to enjoy a spectacular view of the entire cathedral . Finally, end your visit at the dome, and it’s not just the size that matters, but in addition to being magnificent, it’s the second largest in the world.

Sea Point

Do you want to be close to the beaches? And walk the boardwalk? Then Sea point is the neighborhood for you! Here you can walk along the sea or lie on one of the many beaches. When you walk around it looks a bit like the Miami of Cape Town, with the big white buildings and the beaches. One of the popular beaches that are close by is the Clifton Beaches . This beach consists of four parts and are separated by large boulders. There is also an outdoor freshwater swimming pool in Sea Point, overlooking the sea.

Gardens

This is my favorite neighborhood. There are many nice restaurants and bars here, and there is always something going on in this district. The neighborhood is fun for both young and old. The nicest streets in this district are Kloof street and Bree street, this is where the most restaurants and bars can be found. This is often the place for students before going out for a night out on Long Street.

Observatory & Woodstock

Observatory is the student district of Cape Town. You will also find many Dutch students here, whether they are doing an internship or doing volunteer work, you will run into them here. Obs does not have a very large center then, it is most likely 3 to 4 streets, but all the more fun. Every Thursday evening there is a beerpong event where you get to know a lot of new people.

Woodstock is more known for its art. This is where Cape Town’s creatives can get their money’s worth. This is definitely an up and coming area, the streets are filled with street art so you’ll never get bored looking around. If you’re here, be sure to visit the Old Biscuit Mill on Saturday morning, here is a very nice Neighbourgoods market, where you can eat well and listen to live music. Every kitchen in the world is present, so the choice is huge!

Upper Cape

This neighborhood is known as the most colorful neighborhood in Cape Town. Almost every house has a nice color such as red, purple, green or blue. The neighborhood occupies the slopes of Signal Hill. This is also a well-known Muslim quarter, at five o’clock in the morning you will already hear the mosque. The people here are very nice and helpful, and are happy to give you a taste of African cuisine. What probably many people don’t know is that this used to be a township.

Greenpoint

This district is home to the well-known stadium of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is now the venue for rugby matches or concerts. Incidentally, there are not many buildings here, you can enjoy nature and the parks here. Also part of this district is the Signal Hill . Here you can enjoy a picnic in the early evening and enjoy the sunset.

Today’s smartphones have turned us all into hobby photographers. Every day we take pictures of the children, beautiful views to and from work or in nature. But it’s still on holiday that we photograph more than usual – and that’s quite understandable. We travel to see and experience new things, cultivate quality time and expand our horizons, and of course it must be documented! When we at Apollo are on holiday and share our spot shots on social media, there is often a recurring question: How do you take such nice pictures!?

Fortunately, the truth is that it doesn’t take much! Here we have collected some simple tips to help you on your way.

1. Be prepared!

We’ve all experienced it: You see the perfect subject, but then the phone says there’s not enough storage space. Therefore, always make sure you have plenty of free space BEFORE you leave – then you will ensure the perfect picture when, for example, the little one jumps into the water for the first time. Photographing and editing images consumes the battery on the mobile far too quickly, so another good tip is to always carry a power bank in the beach bag. Last but not least: always have the camera easily accessible – and ALWAYS dry the lens! There is nothing worse than when your favorite photo is ruined by grease stains from your pocket.

2. Get to know the camera

Today’s mobiles are equipped with good cameras – and therefore also more advanced camera functions. So play around with it a bit from home – try different formats such as portraits and wide angle, different lighting and exposure times. Also remember that although all mobile phones have autofocus on the camera, you can choose the focus point yourself by pressing the screen on what you want to be the sharpest.

3. Remember the angles

Different angles can give completely different pictures. You must therefore dare to move a little – go both far away for an overview picture and closer for fine details. Squat or lie down on the grass, get on a bench, move the camera up and down and take pictures of the same subject from different places. If you photograph people, this can apply to them too! Wave the dress, kick the sand or pretend to walk – movement in the image creates eye-catching!

4. Do not zoom!

Very few mobile cameras have optical zoom, with the exception of very few expensive models which often have an additional telephoto lens. When you zoom, you are therefore not really doing anything other than cropping the image – and therefore also minimizing the image quality. Therefore, go closer to your subject – unless it is a lion. You’d better prune afterwards.

5. Use colors and frames

A good tip to bring life to the image, or rather to make it a little more exciting, is to either find something colorful – or something that can frame the subject a bit. It can be anything from flowers, some bushes, a wall or something else that you can hide behind or use as a backdrop. If you choose a “frame” for the picture, it will of course become blurry when you set the focal point on the subject – and suddenly the picture looks more professional!

6. Play with the light !

The biggest challenge when photographing on holiday is often the bright sunlight. The sun is not always your best friend because it can quickly create too strong contrasts. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for a cloud to get the best shot; Better use the light to your advantage! Take pictures with the sun behind you, as you will get details, faces, etc., but also try to photograph against the sun, as you can get some cool pictures of silhouettes.

Also remember that the darker it is, the longer the shutter speed must be to capture enough light. Therefore, many of us experience that indoor and evening photos often become more blurred. Therefore, always hold the camera as stable as possible – with both hands, preferably with the elbows close to the body, or find something to support the phone on. It may also be worth investing in a small tripod!

7. People, people, people!

A beach is a beautiful subject, but it will be even nicer if it includes someone we care about? – especially if they are not posing but just being in the moment! When you travel, you often also want to take pictures of the local people in their natural element, but remember to ask permission. And it’s also important to remember that not everyone likes to be photographed

8. Avoid apps

You can of course snap as much as you want from your holiday, but since you probably take pictures that you later want to develop or use for other things, it is a good idea to take the pictures in the camera app itself. The pictures we take directly through other apps such as Snapchat and Instagram are of considerably lower quality – and therefore often become pixelated when they are developed. Pssst! This also applies when we share pictures between us! If you send pictures via Messenger and WhatsApp, the files are compressed and the pictures are of poorer quality. If you have an iPhone, Airdrop is therefore your best friend!

9. Use a good editing tool

Santiago

Rancagua

This coastal town just an hour’s drive from Santiago has many old colonial buildings that give you the feeling of being in Europe. There are many vineyards around Rancagua and the city is therefore a good base if you want to visit Chilean vineyards.

Valparaiso

This colorful city is located right next to the sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The port city is located in a bay and is surrounded by green hills with the Andes mountains in the background. You can easily get lost in the city full of narrow streets, but that way you will only discover beautiful places. The city has an alternative bohemian atmosphere and in the evening there is plenty to do because Valparaiso is known for a busy nightlife. The most beautiful neighborhood of the city is Cerro Concepción with beautiful colored Victorian houses.

Sightseeing in Chile – nature

Torres del Paine

This nature reserve is located in Patagonia in southern Chile. It has beautiful blue lakes, high mountains and robust glaciers. The park is named after three impressive granite towers that you will find in the park, the Grande Paine being the tallest. Animal and plant life is very rich in Torres el Paine. There are various llamas, the large Andean condor and all kinds of other birds. There is also a lot to do in Torres del Paine. You can hike for days, but also kayak or horseback ride.

Magdalena Island

This is the Chilean version of “the end of the world”. Hundreds of thousands of penguins nest on this uninhabited island in the south of Chile . The island itself is already very beautiful to see, but the penguins make it a place not to be missed. It is certainly a special experience to see all the penguins here. If you are successful, you will spot dolphins on the way to the island. Isla Magdalena is one of the most special sights of Chile.

The Lake District

The Lake District is also known as the Switzerland of South America. It is a nice quiet area with, of course, many lakes. In the cities in this area you can clearly see the German colonization reflected in the architecture, making it even more like Switzerland. The best way to discover the Lake District is with a rented car.

Atacama desert

This desert is located in the north of Chile. It is the driest place on earth and a large expanse of plain. In some places in the desert it has not rained for centuries. You can visit the village of San Pedro de Atacama which is located in the middle of the desert. In the desert you can take walks or you can sandboard one of the dunes!

Newport

Nieuwpoort is known as the best sailing center of all Belgian coastal towns, and is home to one of the largest marinas in the North of Europe . It is a historic destination with a lively center and played a major role in the First World War.

Before you leave, think about where you want to go hiking and which hiking routes are possible in this area of ​​the Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada National Park is huge. It covers over 85,883 hectares! So it is not so easy to determine where to start. Good to know is that the Sierra Nevada is spread over two provinces, namely Granada and Almería . The first is the most visited area as it is easier to get to and has the most dramatic scenery.

In the northwest of the Sierra Nevada are super beautiful villages such as Güéjar Sierra, Monachil and Dílar, and this is one of the most beautiful and spectacular parts. Then you also have the beautiful Alpujarras area in the Almeria region. Great hikes also start from here, especially from Capileira in the Poqueira gorge, or Trevélez; the highest village in Spain.

So determine for yourself where it is wise to start in terms of location, and then compare different hiking routes in the Sierra Nevada. You can best estimate for yourself whether you can take an easy, medium or difficult route.

Check which months it is best to plan your visit

In principle, any season, even winter, is fine for hiking in the Sierra Nevada. Keep in mind that the highest peaks are not always accessible in winter due to snow and ice. The sun (almost) always shines in the south of Spain.

However, the Sierra Nevada is located in an area where the weather can change quickly, all year round! In the high season it is not wise to start your hike. It is sometimes so blistering hot that this can really get in the way of the walk. For the most predictable and pleasant weather, visit the Sierra Nevada in the spring or autumn months.

Book your accommodation(s) in the Sierra Nevada (well) in advance

Once you have finally decided in which area you want to start hiking, you also have to ask yourself where you want to spend the night. If you are going on day hikes in the Sierra Nevada, you can simply book a hotel in the village or city from which you start and return. However, if you are going to hike for several days, make sure you book accommodation well in advance (for example, look up the villages you pass and make sure you have some slack with the time).  

A nice option is also to spend a few days in different places and get to know different areas that way. If you really want to go back to basics, spend the night in refugios; simple mountain huts, scattered throughout the Sierra Nevada. Often these have wooden bunk beds to sleep on. You will need your own sleeping bag and mat! Wild camping is also allowed in many places in the National Park (according to strict rules).

Think about how you want to explore the Sierra Nevada (transport)

The most flexible way to explore the Sierra Nevada is, as in many cases, by car. Most walks start from places that cannot be reached by public transport. However, there are routes that are accessible by buses (these are often the more popular, and therefore busier hikes). In some cases (one-way walks), it is even more convenient to travel to certain starting points by public transport, because then you don’t have to go through the hassle of collecting your car.

Make sure you have a good map of the area with you

Before you leave, always make sure you buy an extensive map of the area where you are going to hike (preferably of the entire National Park). Some people download the folder via their phone, which is also fine. However, in some cases the range isn’t optimal (or there isn’t any range at all), which you really don’t want when you’re walking around in the middle of nowhere! A compass can also always be useful. In addition, in the Sierra Nevada, various symbols are visible in certain places, indicating routes, directions or points of interest. It’s good to take a picture of this.

Think about whether you want to go alone or with a guide

In many cases, you can simply face the rugged mountains and dramatic landscapes of the Sierra Nevada. If you don’t like this and want to have someone with you who is more experienced, consider booking an organized tour and go hiking in the Sierra Nevada with an experienced guide. This can also be a good idea if you want to do winter hikes, or hikes to the extreme areas in the park. In addition, a local mountain guide will of course have a lot of knowledge about the local architecture, geology, fauna and flora. Also super interesting!

Make sure you have good equipment, plenty of water and snacks

Intense sun and heat can cause a lot of discomfort. Even in winter it can still feel very warm in the Sierra Nevada. So water is the key! If you want to drink from a natural water source, take a fast-flowing section of the river. Another option is to use water purification tablets, if you want to drink from a lake, for example.

In many parts of the Sierra Nevada, the ground is uneven and strewn with rocks. Before you know it, you’ll sprain an ankle. So make sure you put on good quality hiking boots when you leave, as well as a sturdy water and wind jacket and zip-off hiking pants (the weather can change quickly, especially in the high-altitude areas).
