Behind every memorable trip lie secrets that traditional travel guides often overlook. These subtle yet essential tips make all the difference between a simple getaway and a truly enriching adventure. Let’s uncover these secrets to a successful trip that only seasoned travelers know.

Hidden preparations for an unforgettable trip

The success of a trip depends not only on the chosen destination, but also on the art of good preparation. A good balance between spontaneity and organization can transform a simple getaway into a memorable adventure. To discover the secrets of a successful trip, it’s essential to pay attention to the little details, such as the choice of activities or the flexibility of the itinerary. These elements can greatly influence your experience and allow you to fully enjoy every moment.

The success of a trip begins well before departure, in a preparation phase that is often overlooked. This crucial step is not limited to booking flights and accommodations, but encompasses in-depth research into the local culture and authentic experiences available.

Agile mastery of micro-planning

Many people think that planning a trip means anticipating every detail, but that’s not the case. In fact, the key to a successful trip lies in the balance between organization and spontaneity . Identify a few places or activities that appeal to you each day, but also leave yourself some free time.

These unplanned moments are often the most memorable, allowing you to be surprised by unexpected encounters or breathtaking scenery. By balancing a flexible structure with an openness to the unforeseen, you can fully experience every moment of your adventure.

Local network: prepare your connection before departure

To ensure a truly memorable trip, nothing beats connecting with locals before you even arrive at your destination. This can transform your experience into an authentic and personal adventure. Connect with the local community by joining online forums or social media groups dedicated to the place you’re visiting.

These interactions will offer you a unique perspective that tourist guides simply can’t provide. By chatting with expats or locals, you’ll discover personalized tips, hidden gems, and one-of-a-kind experiences. It’s an inspiring way to discover the world through the eyes of those who live in it every day. Immerse yourself in this dynamic and let each exchange enrich your trip far beyond your expectations!

Minimalist equipment for strategic efficiency

The paradox of the accomplished traveler lies in their ability to pack little while lacking nothing. Forget generic equipment lists and focus on versatile items that adapt to various situations.

Multipurpose objects: hidden everyday treasures

A microfiber scarf is a true Swiss Army knife for the modern traveler. Lightweight and versatile, it can be transformed into a towel, eye mask, sunscreen, or even an improvised bag when needed. This small accessory makes all the difference in your backpack.

To maximize space without sacrificing comfort, opt for quick-drying technical clothing and compressible accessories. These smart choices will allow you to pack everything you need without weighing down your luggage. The secret lies in the versatility and efficiency of these items, which make every adventure more enjoyable.

Essential technological tools for everyday life

Traveling with a smartphone is great, but to be truly prepared for any eventuality, consider slipping a robust power bank into your bag. Staying connected wherever you are becomes child’s play with this accessory.

Preparation is often the key to a successful trip. Choosing a destination that suits your travel style can make all the difference. For example, Sri Lanka is a country well-suited to family travel, offering both breathtaking scenery and a rich local culture. This type of destination can satisfy both adventure seekers and those looking for relaxation.

Imagine yourself in the heart of a foreign city, eager to discover its best offerings. A universal adapter and an international SIM card become your best allies. These tools give you access to local apps that enrich your adventures and simplify every step of your journey. With the right preparation, your trip transforms into an even more immersive and memorable experience.

A unique cultural immersion and enriching local experiences

The difference between a mere tourist and a traveler lies in the depth of cultural immersion. This often-overlooked dimension radically transforms the perception and experience of a place, creating memories far more lasting than any photograph of a monument.

Local daily rituals to enrich your daily life

Immerse yourself in the daily morning routine of the locals by sharing their rituals. Take the time to sip a coffee in their favorite establishment or stroll among the colorful stalls of the local market.

These seemingly simple moments reveal an intimate side of the local culture. Experiencing them offers not only a unique perspective on neighborhood life but also the opportunity to forge genuine connections with its residents. The richness of an ordinary morning can surprise you with its ability to create authentic and memorable bonds.

Alternative routes: hidden secrets revealed

To have an authentic experience during your travels, get off the beaten path. Take the time to explore the neighborhoods where locals go about their daily lives.

Let yourself be tempted by local public transport, which will take you to hidden and fascinating places. Dare to lose yourself in these side streets, where the magic happens discreetly, far from the tourist crowds. It is in these moments of wandering that you will discover the true face of your destination, the one that only reveals itself to those who take the time to observe and absorb the atmosphere.

Every street corner can reveal a surprise: a quaint café with welcoming regulars, a colorful market brimming with new flavors, or a lively square where children play under the watchful eyes of the elders. These precious moments add a depth to your trip that no postcard could ever capture.

The untold stories behind unforgettable journeys

The true secrets to a successful trip lie not in exclusive destinations or luxurious hotels, but in a conscious and open approach to the experience. By combining strategic planning, judicious gear, and genuine cultural immersion, any trip can be transformed into an extraordinary adventure. These subtle yet powerful tips will allow you to create authentic memories and human connections that go far beyond mere tourism.

Discover our complete guide for a perfect week in London: iconic attractions, restaurants, museums, and unique nights out. Explore the best of the city with original ideas and practical tips, whether you’re passionate about history, art, shopping, or looking for unusual experiences!

A week’s holiday in London? That’s a great idea! After all, why settle for just a weekend in the British capital when you can spend seven days there? The only downside is finding things to do. But in a city as vibrant as London, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Feeling uninspired? Okay, we’ll be nice and share our one-week London itinerary with you. Breathtaking views of London, burlesque nights or Mamma Mia, incredible street food markets, and other must-see attractions—discover right now what your stay in the UK has in store. Remember, this itinerary isn’t set in stone (and thankfully so, because your feet might get sore)! Use it for inspiration, remix it to suit your own style, and share your memories with us using #GoCity.

Visiting London Day 1: Explore Central London

Since you’ve just arrived in London, we’ll start by introducing you to some of the classics of central London, with a few surprises in store! And if you ever doubted that this article was about London, just read the names of some of the tourist attractions from this first day to be sure… (we didn’t do it on purpose, we promise).

Morning: The Tower of London and Tower Bridge

Everyone has heard of the Tower of London , so much so, in fact, that it was voted one of the top 10 must-see attractions in France. But what exactly is the Tower of London? It’s a fortress located on the banks of the Thames that was once a prison where most of the prisoners were executed . It’s a fantastic historical visit if you want to learn more about London’s history.

If you don’t want to start your trip with stories of executions (which is totally understandable), you can also visit Tower Bridge . Start by taking a selfie in front of it, just to let your friends know you’re “in London, baby.” You can then go inside and walk across the glass walkway, 42 meters above the ground , visit the Victorian-era engine rooms, and learn about the monument’s history with an audio guide in French .

Expert tip: for these two attractions, thanks to Go City passes , you do n’t need to book your tickets in advance, just present your pass at the ticket office!

LUNCH IDEA: If you end your morning at Tower Bridge, it’s just a 15-minute walk to Borough Market. Open every day except Monday, Borough Market is a true London institution, offering stalls serving specialties from all over the world and plenty of delicious options, often for under £10 .

Afternoon: the Tate Modern or London Bridge

After a good meal, we offer you two different activities, one calm and the other, well, you’ll see.

Want to discover London’s temple of contemporary art? Head to the Tate Modern . And what’s more, we’re really nice because, in addition to being just a 10-minute walk from Borough Market, admission to the museum is free . With its extraordinary permanent exhibitions, you’re guaranteed to spend the afternoon in awe.

If you’re like Omar Sy in The Intouchables and nosebleeds against a white background don’t impress you much, we have another activity to suggest: the London Bridge Experience . Part historical tour, part haunted house, one thing’s for sure: the experience won’t leave you unmoved.

Don’t believe us? Watch the video:

Evening: Sunset at the Sky Garden

To recover from your emotions, how about going for a drink with a view of all of London? Head to the Sky Garden , at the top of the Walkie-Talkie skyscraper (no, we’re not kidding… that’s how we say it in English).

The best part about the Sky Garden? You can go up for free from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 11 am to 9 pm on weekends! That’s right, all you have to do is book your tickets here . If you get hungry, you can also grab a bite to eat at one of its two restaurants. Otherwise, head downstairs to explore the neighborhood; it’s full of delicious places to eat!

Visiting London Day 2: Touring Historic London

We didn’t want to be too obvious by having you visit Buckingham Palace on the first day, but we’ll have to get on with it! So, for this second day in London, let’s head towards the historic center.

Morning: Buckingham Palace, Changing of the Guard and Royal Mews

Buckingham Palace, the changing of the guard and all that jazz, is it really worth going? Let’s just say it’s interesting to do at least once, especially if you’re on a week-long trip to London, you have the time.

Grab your coffee at the local Pain à Manger (you’ll understand when you arrive in London) and head to Buckingham Palace to watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place at 11:00 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. If you wish to visit Buckingham Palace, unfortunately, you’ll need to plan your trip to London for July, August, or September, the only months the palace is open to the public.

However, if you still wish to visit, please note that the Royal Mews are open from February to October, Thursday to Monday. You will then be able to discover the most beautiful stables in the world, home to Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, as well as an amazing collection of royal carriages and coaches.

LUNCH IDEA: You won’t feel like you’re in the UK until you’ve had proper fish and chips. Why not pop into The Laughing Halibut and try a good one? If you don’t like fish, don’t worry, they have plenty of other options!

Afternoon: Westminster Abbey and Thames River cruise

Once you’ve had your fill, head to a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Westminster Abbey . It’s one of the most important historical monuments in London, and indeed the entire country. The abbey has hosted numerous royal events throughout the ages, including coronations and weddings , no less!

Get yourself a free digital guide (available in French) and take a tour of Poets’ Corner, College Garden or Lady Chapel.

Next, head to the Thames for an Uber Boat tour . The dock is located right next to Big Ben. We don’t recommend visiting Big Ben because the number of places is extremely limited, but still, consider taking a photo with the world’s most famous clock in the background – it’s always a nice touch.

The Uber boat is more of a means of transport than a tourist attraction, but with your day ticket you can enjoy stunning views of all the London landmarks located along the Thames, and hop on and off whenever you like.

Evening: London Eye

If you decide to disembark where you boarded, you’ll find yourself in the perfect spot to board the London Eye . Whether with family or your loved one, head to the Ferris wheel at sunset for a panoramic view of the city lights. You’ll have a clear view of Big Ben directly opposite.

Expert tip : consider booking your ticket online in advance, as it will only cost you £25.50 compared to £33 on the day.

Visiting London Day 3: Museums and shopping

Clearly, this day is what you’d call a “mix and match.” Why? Because with no fewer than four suggested museums, you’ll have to make some choices. The good news is, there’s something for everyone, so have fun!

Morning: the British Museum (or elsewhere)

Good morning! We’re off for another fantastic day in London! This morning, we’re starting with a productive stop: the British Museum in Bloomsbury. This free museum , open to the public all year round except at Christmas, is one of the must-see attractions in London.

Between Greek antiquities, relics of ancient Egypt, and archaeological wonders of the Near East , you’ll travel the world and journey through the ages on this unique visit. Of course, we suggest spending the morning there, but be aware that you could easily lose yourself for much longer! Just be careful not to get locked in for the night… Unless you’re Ben Stiller, the cursed Egyptian tablets and key-stealing monkeys might give you a run for your money.

If the British Museum doesn’t appeal to you, you could also visit the Charles Dickens Museum , dedicated to this giant of English literature, author of Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, somewhat the British equivalent of our Honoré de Balzac. Alternatively, you’ll also find the Postal Museum nearby, devoted to the history of the English postal service; it’s a museum as surprising as it is fascinating (there’s even a miniature train inside).

LUNCH IDEA: Fancy a hearty portion of fresh pasta for under £7? Then head to PaStation , less than a 10-minute walk from the British Museum. Alternatively, because we’re nice and also thinking of our poor friends with gluten intolerance, you can enjoy a great kebab (or other Greek specialties) for under £8 at Great Grill House (those Brits do like to use unusual capital letters in their restaurant names, don’t they?).

Afternoon: Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden

Another busy afternoon ahead! If you’re an art lover, we suggest a visit to the National Gallery , located in Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London. Entry is free, and you’ll find masterpieces by artists ranging from Van Gogh to Cézanne. While you’re in Trafalgar, take the time to climb to the top of the Great Fire of London monument . After ascending 311 steps, you’ll find yourself 61 meters high with a breathtaking view of London!

If you’ve visited enough museums for the day, we suggest you go for a walk instead. Since you’re already in the city center, several options are available. You could, for example, head to Oxford Street and Regent Street for an unlimited shopping spree !

You can also visit Chinatown and Soho, or simply head to Covent Garden . It’s also a great place for shopping and finding souvenirs. For example, you can buy English tea at Fortnum & Mason (the official supermarket supplier to the Royal Family) or find eclectic items at the Apple Market . However, don’t be disappointed; you’re more likely to find rotary phones there than the latest iPhone.

Evening show

The West End district, where Covent Garden is located, is also where you’ll find most of the city’s theatrical performances . The main problem for us poor French speakers is that they’re in English… Well, if you happen to speak English, take advantage of it to buy tickets and have an amazing evening.

Alternatively, we suggest a slightly risqué evening at the House of Burlesque . Of course, it’s not exactly family-friendly, but a speakeasy-style night can be a fantastic memory! Entry tickets start at £10, and you can even take a class if you like.

Visiting London Day 4: Exploring the Greenwich district

For this fourth day of your stay in London, let’s start with the basics. We know you’re really keen to read Green-Witche , but if you ask someone for directions to GreenWiTchE, even with your best (least bad?) accent, no one will understand you. Yes, it’s pronounced Greenitche . Hey, we can hear you complaining now, as if French were more logical. Do you want to remind us how you pronounce “eggs” or
“woman”?

Enough joking around, let’s go discover Green Itch.

Morning: Royal Observatory or Old Royal Naval College

This morning, we offer two distinct activities, depending on whether you want to have your head in space or your feet in the water!

First, explore the Royal Observatory Greenwich with your French audio guide, who will certainly pronounce all the English proper names correctly. You will have the chance to discover how the first telescope was made, to walk on the prime meridian , where the Eastern and Western hemispheres meet at 0° longitude, and to learn how the stars and seas were first mapped .

Second option: The Cutty Sark , the last surviving clipper ship from the tea trade era. It’s a fantastic visit for history buffs, as you’ll discover what life was like on board through superb multi-sensory exhibits that bring the ship to life . It’s one of the best places to visit during your trip to London.

Psst, if after all you don’t want to choose, consider ordering your Go City All Inclusive pass, it allows you to visit an unlimited number of attractions over a given period, saving you up to 50% on the price of your entrance tickets!

LUNCH IDEA: History works up an appetite, after all. For lunch, head to Greenwich Market where over 48 food stalls await! Open all week, you’ll find just about anything at a reasonable price. You can even buy handcrafted items to take home.

Afternoon: Go up to the O2

One of the best attractions in the area: going to the top of the O2 Arena . Clearly, those with a weak stomach should abstain, but if you have a strong stomach, this is an activity you’ll be talking about for a long time!

Secured by a harness, you’ll ascend to a height of 52 meters to enjoy panoramic views of the Canary Wharf district and the boats sailing on the Thames. The experience lasts 90 minutes but promises to provide memories for a lifetime!

Evening in Greenwich

For an evening out outside central London, check out TOCA Social Greenwich , also located in the O2 Arena. You’ll find all sorts of games there, from classic foosball and arcade games to those using the latest technology. Thirsty? No problem, as the venue has a bar and snacks available. Remember to wear sneakers and light clothing, because the competitive spirit is likely to catch up with you and you’ll work up a sweat!

Do you feel more like singing and dancing than acting? Book your tickets for Mamma Mia! The Party . What’s that? It’s simple: an immersive experience that transports you into the eponymous film, where you can belt out ABBA songs ! Honestly, this event alone is reason enough to come to London.

Visiting London Day 5: Palaces, parks and street food

Well, if you’re following our suggestions to the letter, we hope you’ve packed some walking shoes! Otherwise, perhaps it’s time to make good use of your Oyster Card , don’t you think?

Morning: Palace or museum?

Good morning! This morning, once again, the choice is yours! The first option: Kensington Palace . If you woke up feeling like royalty, come and discover the birthplace of Queen Victoria, which was home to young royals for over 300 years. If you have a passion for the British monarchy, this historic place is a must-see!

Are you more into dinosaurs than royalty? Spend the morning at the Natural History Museum in London! With over 80 million specimens and artifacts, the Natural History Museum is undoubtedly one of London’s most fascinating museums. Don’t miss the exceptional Dinosaur Gallery, complete with a Triceratops skull! Worried about getting lost? Pick up your free Natural History Museum souvenir guide , included with your Go City Pass.

Afternoon (and lunch): Notting Hill and Hyde Park

Are you familiar with the Notting Hill area ? Yes, the very same one from Notting Hill, with its colorful houses and, as you might have guessed, Hugh Grant’s bookstore, which obviously doesn’t belong to Hugh Grant and is actually a souvenir shop… we apologize for shattering your dreams.

So, for lunch, head to Portobello Road Market , one of London’s most famous. Besides finding all sorts of interesting souvenirs to take home, you’ll also find an excellent street food market . Open every day except Sunday, it’s the perfect place to stroll and enjoy the beautiful London weather.

Once you’ve finished shopping in Notting Hill, taken some lovely souvenir photos, and bought your lunch, head to Hyde Park to enjoy it . It’s one of the largest and most beautiful parks in the capital. You’ll find Marble Arch there, and in winter, it’s where the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland Christmas market takes place.

It’s cold outside and you’re more Grinch than Santa Claus? Take shelter at Frameless , an immersive exhibition where you can stroll through famous paintings by Van Gogh, Dali or Monet!

Evening: Pub and Live Music

Spending the day in Kensington and Notting Hill puts you just a stone’s throw from the Royal Albert Hall, home to some of the capital’s finest concerts. However, concert tickets can be pricey, so we suggest spending the evening in a traditional English pub with live music. Head to The Elgar Room Brasserie or return to the city center to Ain’t Nothin But The Blues Bar for a melodious evening accompanied by beer and salt and vinegar crisps (yum!).

For an extraordinary evening, keep an eye on The Lost Estate ‘s program , which often organizes incredible immersive events!

Visiting London Day 6: Camden and North London

You didn’t think we’d forget the most famous London district in France, did you! Yes indeed, today we’re heading to North London for a surprising visit, like Camden.

Psst, we’re not including it in the itinerary, but if you want to get a souvenir tattoo, this is probably the right place.

Morning: London Zoo

Did you know London has a zoo? Now you do! Located in Regent’s Park, London Zoo is home to over 20,000 animals of 750 species from around the world. Explore the different habitats, from the beach and penguin enclosure to the butterfly paradise, the lion enclosure, and the tiger territory.

Throughout the year, the zoo organizes themed events such as Halloween at the zoo or visits with Santa Claus. You can even book special experiences like a monkey encounter or a morning spent as a zookeeper caring for the giraffes (for an additional fee). Be sure to check the schedule of events before your visit to make the most of your time at the zoo.

Well, it’s definitely more family-oriented than the cabaret evening, we told you we’d make up for it!

Afternoon (and lunch): Camden Market and King’s Cross

Routes like these work up an appetite! Our solution? Camden Market! As you’ve probably gathered from reading this article, we’re all about family harmony. That’s why we’re suggesting places to eat where you don’t all have to order the same thing to eat together. Sushi, tacos, pizza, burgers, and even poke bowls—at Camden Market, you’ll find it all !

Then take some time to stroll through this vibrant London neighborhood and be sure to take photos of the oversized shop signs on Camden High Street. You could easily spend an afternoon wandering along the canal.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan but don’t have the time (or budget) to visit Universal Studios, it’s time for a quick detour to King’s Cross . Of course, if you’re coming from France on the Eurostar, you can start your journey there. Yes, the famous London station is indeed home to Platform 9 3/4 . Unfortunately, the Hogwarts Express only runs from there on September 1st. But you’ll surely find something to console yourself with at the Harry Potter shop , we trust you!

Evening: Sunset at Primrose Hill

If the weather permits (and your thighs aren’t too sore), buy some picnic supplies and a drink, then head to Primrose Hill . Be warned, it’s a bit of a climb, but it’s definitely worth it, as it’s one of the best spots in London to watch the sunset.

Visiting London Day 7: East London

It’s already the last day of your week in London and with the route you’ve just taken, you must be exhausted! For this last day, we’ll take it easy and head a little to the East of central London to blend in with the locals.

Morning: St. Paul’s Cathedral

Of course, if you know London, you’ve probably figured us out; we’re cheating a little because St. Paul’s Cathedral is more in the city center than in the East, but it’s our itinerary, so we do what we want. Besides, it’s only a 30-minute walk from our next destination, so we’re not going to overthink it!

In fact, we couldn’t let you leave London without showing you one of the most recognizable sites in the British capital . Start your visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral in the crypt where you’ll discover more than 2,000 memorials and effigies.

Then, it will be time to climb! You can access the nave to enjoy a spectacular view of the entire cathedral . Finally, end your visit at the dome, and it’s not just the size that matters, but in addition to being magnificent, it’s the second largest in the world.

Afternoon (and lunch): Brick Lane

Brick Lane is one of London’s coolest neighborhoods. If you’re there on a Sunday, for a change, we suggest enjoying the street food market for lunch! If you’re there any other day, why not try a proper English breakfast at Momlette ? Delicious and generous, we know you’ll love it.

As we said, today we’re taking it easy, so enjoy your afternoon exploring the neighborhood. Discover the impressive graffiti in Allen Garden , stock up on vintage vinyl at Flashback Records, hunt for bargains in the local thrift stores, or even have tea with cats at Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium .

One thing is certain in Brick Lane: you won’t be bored anytime soon!

Evening: a quick beer and that’s a wrap!

For this last evening, nothing too complicated, after almost a week in town, it’s time to sit down and order a good beer in one of the many bars in Brick Lane , such as The Truman Brewery for example.

Look at your photos with family or travel companions and take the time to appreciate everything you have just experienced.

Save money on your week in London with Go City

That concludes our ultimate guide for a week-long trip to London. We know, it was packed with sightseeing, but hey, that was the point, wasn’t it? In any case, we hope you enjoyed it and that you’ll find some inspiration to make your stay in the British capital truly memorable.

One last tip: to explore London without worrying about the cost, order your Go City Passes now! With entry to over 90 must-see tourist attractions and activities included (many of which we just mentioned), you’ll save up to 50% on entrance fees. And when you see the price of hotels in London, it’s definitely worth saving money wherever you can, isn’t it?

Cape Town is an immense city that consists of many neighborhoods, so how do you know which neighborhoods are the nicest? Here are a few of my favorite neighborhoods.

Sea Point

Do you want to be close to the beaches? And walk the boardwalk? Then Sea point is the neighborhood for you! Here you can walk along the sea or lie on one of the many beaches. When you walk around it looks a bit like the Miami of Cape Town, with the big white buildings and the beaches. One of the popular beaches that are close by is the Clifton Beaches . This beach consists of four parts and are separated by large boulders. There is also an outdoor freshwater swimming pool in Sea Point, overlooking the sea.

Gardens

This is my favorite neighborhood. There are many nice restaurants and bars here, and there is always something going on in this district. The neighborhood is fun for both young and old. The nicest streets in this district are Kloof street and Bree street, this is where the most restaurants and bars can be found. This is often the place for students before going out for a night out on Long Street.

Observatory & Woodstock

Observatory is the student district of Cape Town. You will also find many Dutch students here, whether they are doing an internship or doing volunteer work, you will run into them here. Obs does not have a very large center then, it is most likely 3 to 4 streets, but all the more fun. Every Thursday evening there is a beerpong event where you get to know a lot of new people.

Woodstock is more known for its art. This is where Cape Town’s creatives can get their money’s worth. This is definitely an up and coming area, the streets are filled with street art so you’ll never get bored looking around. If you’re here, be sure to visit the Old Biscuit Mill on Saturday morning, here is a very nice Neighbourgoods market, where you can eat well and listen to live music. Every kitchen in the world is present, so the choice is huge!

Upper Cape

This neighborhood is known as the most colorful neighborhood in Cape Town. Almost every house has a nice color such as red, purple, green or blue. The neighborhood occupies the slopes of Signal Hill. This is also a well-known Muslim quarter, at five o’clock in the morning you will already hear the mosque. The people here are very nice and helpful, and are happy to give you a taste of African cuisine. What probably many people don’t know is that this used to be a township.

Greenpoint

This district is home to the well-known stadium of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is now the venue for rugby matches or concerts. Incidentally, there are not many buildings here, you can enjoy nature and the parks here. Also part of this district is the Signal Hill . Here you can enjoy a picnic in the early evening and enjoy the sunset.

Holidays are prime time for photography, and with these simple tips in your suitcase, you’re guaranteed some fantastic holiday memories!

Today’s smartphones have turned us all into hobby photographers. Every day we take pictures of the children, beautiful views to and from work or in nature. But it’s still on holiday that we photograph more than usual – and that’s quite understandable. We travel to see and experience new things, cultivate quality time and expand our horizons, and of course it must be documented! When we at Apollo are on holiday and share our spot shots on social media, there is often a recurring question: How do you take such nice pictures!?

Fortunately, the truth is that it doesn’t take much! Here we have collected some simple tips to help you on your way.

1. Be prepared!

We’ve all experienced it: You see the perfect subject, but then the phone says there’s not enough storage space. Therefore, always make sure you have plenty of free space BEFORE you leave – then you will ensure the perfect picture when, for example, the little one jumps into the water for the first time. Photographing and editing images consumes the battery on the mobile far too quickly, so another good tip is to always carry a power bank in the beach bag. Last but not least: always have the camera easily accessible – and ALWAYS dry the lens! There is nothing worse than when your favorite photo is ruined by grease stains from your pocket.

2. Get to know the camera

Today’s mobiles are equipped with good cameras – and therefore also more advanced camera functions. So play around with it a bit from home – try different formats such as portraits and wide angle, different lighting and exposure times. Also remember that although all mobile phones have autofocus on the camera, you can choose the focus point yourself by pressing the screen on what you want to be the sharpest.

3. Remember the angles

Different angles can give completely different pictures. You must therefore dare to move a little – go both far away for an overview picture and closer for fine details. Squat or lie down on the grass, get on a bench, move the camera up and down and take pictures of the same subject from different places. If you photograph people, this can apply to them too! Wave the dress, kick the sand or pretend to walk – movement in the image creates eye-catching!

4. Do not zoom!

Very few mobile cameras have optical zoom, with the exception of very few expensive models which often have an additional telephoto lens. When you zoom, you are therefore not really doing anything other than cropping the image – and therefore also minimizing the image quality. Therefore, go closer to your subject – unless it is a lion. You’d better prune afterwards.

5. Use colors and frames

A good tip to bring life to the image, or rather to make it a little more exciting, is to either find something colorful – or something that can frame the subject a bit. It can be anything from flowers, some bushes, a wall or something else that you can hide behind or use as a backdrop. If you choose a “frame” for the picture, it will of course become blurry when you set the focal point on the subject – and suddenly the picture looks more professional!

6. Play with the light !

The biggest challenge when photographing on holiday is often the bright sunlight. The sun is not always your best friend because it can quickly create too strong contrasts. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for a cloud to get the best shot; Better use the light to your advantage! Take pictures with the sun behind you, as you will get details, faces, etc., but also try to photograph against the sun, as you can get some cool pictures of silhouettes.

Also remember that the darker it is, the longer the shutter speed must be to capture enough light. Therefore, many of us experience that indoor and evening photos often become more blurred. Therefore, always hold the camera as stable as possible – with both hands, preferably with the elbows close to the body, or find something to support the phone on. It may also be worth investing in a small tripod!

7. People, people, people!

A beach is a beautiful subject, but it will be even nicer if it includes someone we care about? – especially if they are not posing but just being in the moment! When you travel, you often also want to take pictures of the local people in their natural element, but remember to ask permission. And it’s also important to remember that not everyone likes to be photographed

8. Avoid apps

You can of course snap as much as you want from your holiday, but since you probably take pictures that you later want to develop or use for other things, it is a good idea to take the pictures in the camera app itself. The pictures we take directly through other apps such as Snapchat and Instagram are of considerably lower quality – and therefore often become pixelated when they are developed. Pssst! This also applies when we share pictures between us! If you send pictures via Messenger and WhatsApp, the files are compressed and the pictures are of poorer quality. If you have an iPhone, Airdrop is therefore your best friend!

9. Use a good editing tool

Are you planning to develop the images, but would like to edit them a bit first? Then we recommend using a good editing tool that doesn’t compress the size or quality! Photoshop and InDesign are examples of good tools. On the latter, you can also save your own “presets” (filters) so that all your images have roughly the same color scale – just like the images above. Perfect for stories on social media and photo books!

10. Take LOTS of pictures !

We don’t need to develop every picture we take. Today we select the favorites from hundreds – so always take many photos of the same subject! On most phones, you can automatically take a bunch of pictures at once if you hold down the shutter button. How to prevent dad from ruining the perfect family photo by blinking

Some go to the same country every year, or sometimes even to the same destination. To make it really easy, some even go to the same campsite every year. That offers a lot of advantages. You know exactly where you are going, what to expect and what there is to do and what not to do. But it can also be a bit boring sometimes, going to the same destination every year.

But choosing a new destination every year can also be a challenge. To make it a little easier for you, we have listed 5 nice ideas. Five fun and beautiful destinations or ideas to do during your next vacation.

1. Camping in France

France is a wonderful holiday country for young and old. Winding rivers, azure blue sea, charming cities and last but not least good food. A campsite in France – in Brittany, the Tarn or the French Alps, for example – is a budget-friendly option for a great summer holiday with the family. You can travel on spec through different parts of the country or make a campsite in the south of France your new home for a few weeks. Do you want something different? Then consider the rugged island of Corsica, also known as ‘the island of beauty’. This relatively unknown destination is a gem for both outdoor and beach lovers.

2. A bike ride through the Netherlands

Do you want to stay close to home and enjoy sports activities? Then a cycling holiday might be something for your family. It may not sound sexy, but you see so much more on a bike. Moreover, the Netherlands has plenty of nice campsites with a swimming pool, playground or in-house entertainment. A cycling holiday is also cheap, environmentally friendly and healthy. How well do you really know your own country? Have you ever walked? Seen the heather in bloom on the Drenthse Aa or played farmer’s golf?

3. City trips in Europe

Do you prefer a short vacation? A city trip to Berlin, Paris or London is also great fun for the children. Go canoeing on the River Spree, shop on the Champs-Elysees or catch a musical at Picadilly Circus. Cities in Southern and Eastern Europe are usually cheaper and certainly no less interesting. Ever heard of Plovdiv, Bulgaria with its ancient theater; or the cute Montserrat in northern Spain, where human towers are regularly built? Of course you can also plan a city trip during your car tour or beach holiday.

4. Rent a holiday home

Nowadays there are more and more holiday homes online, which you can rent for a few nights or even a month. Do you want to experience an unforgettable family holiday with your best friends, your parents or sister-in-law? On the internet you will find the best deals on beautiful accommodations in Spain, Portugal and Croatia. You don’t have to miss the luxury of home, you have plenty of space and your children can go their own way. How wonderful would it be to live in a house with a swimming pool and sauna for a month?

5. On safari in Africa

Do you have an anniversary to celebrate, had a super good year and do you really want something special with your partner and children? Then go on safari in Tanzania , Kenya or Uganda. Look for the Big Five, camp under the stars and prepare your own food over a campfire. Of course you don’t have to go to the other side of the world for real adventure, but Africa certainly has something magical!

These falls are located in Arizona in the United States. The water falls from about 40 meters down and takes on different colors throughout the year. This mineral-rich water occasionally turns green, blue and clear turquoise. In the vicinity of the Havasu Falls are several natural pools where you can swim!

2. Little River Canyon

This gigantic natural pool is also located in the United States. The Little River Canyon is located in Alabama and, contrary to what the name suggests, is not that small at all. This lake is no less than 19 kilometers long and is surrounded by rugged rocks that you can jump from. The Little River Canyon is considered one of the cleanest water sources in the United States!

These magical lakes are located on the Isle of Skye (Scotland). These beautiful lakes are located at the foot of the black Cuillins mountains and the water has a beautiful blue-pink color. You can swim great here, but don’t let the warm color of the water fool you. After all, you are in Scotland, the water is freezing!

4. Erawan Waterfalls

The Erawan National Park is located in Thailand and you will find several beautiful natural pools here. A staircase of no less than 7 waterfalls ends in a turquoise-blue lake where you can swim. You will also find beautiful caves around the water that you should definitely visit!

5. Devil’s Pool

The so-called Devil’s Pool is located on top of the impressive Victoria Falls in Zambia. This world famous swimming pool flows into a waterfall of no less than 110 meters high. This natural pool is therefore not for the faint of heart! Google in advance whether the Devil’s Pool is accessible… You can only swim here during the dry period (May to October).

6. The Blue Hole

Anyone who says you have to go to Jamaica just for the beautiful beaches has never heard of The Blue Hole. This unique natural pool is located in a cave and you can enjoy swimming here. Please note: the road to this natural pool is unpaved. So you will need a strong car.

7. Blue Lagoon

This beautiful natural pool in Iceland is by far the most famous body of water in the world. Less than an hour’s drive from Reykjavik you will find the famous Blue Lagoon. You can enjoy swimming all year round in this thermal lake. The mineral-rich water has a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, even in winter!

This breathtaking natural pool is located near Chichén Itzá in Mexico and is considered by many to be the most beautiful natural pool in the world. You really get the feeling here that you have entered another world. The lake is surrounded by rocks and the beautifully clear water in combination with the hanging vines provide a romantic picture. Swimming in Ik Kil will stay with you forever!

Santiago

Santiago is the capital of Chile and the city has around four million inhabitants. You can easily explore the city center on foot. Santiago is a city with many historic buildings but also with a large number of modern skyscrapers. It is a lively city where you can eat well and with a vibrant nightlife. During a holiday in Chile it is nice to stay in Santiago for two or three days.

Rancagua

This coastal town just an hour’s drive from Santiago has many old colonial buildings that give you the feeling of being in Europe. There are many vineyards around Rancagua and the city is therefore a good base if you want to visit Chilean vineyards.

Valparaiso

This colorful city is located right next to the sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The port city is located in a bay and is surrounded by green hills with the Andes mountains in the background. You can easily get lost in the city full of narrow streets, but that way you will only discover beautiful places. The city has an alternative bohemian atmosphere and in the evening there is plenty to do because Valparaiso is known for a busy nightlife. The most beautiful neighborhood of the city is Cerro Concepción with beautiful colored Victorian houses.

Sightseeing in Chile – nature

Torres del Paine

This nature reserve is located in Patagonia in southern Chile. It has beautiful blue lakes, high mountains and robust glaciers. The park is named after three impressive granite towers that you will find in the park, the Grande Paine being the tallest. Animal and plant life is very rich in Torres el Paine. There are various llamas, the large Andean condor and all kinds of other birds. There is also a lot to do in Torres del Paine. You can hike for days, but also kayak or horseback ride.

Magdalena Island

This is the Chilean version of “the end of the world”. Hundreds of thousands of penguins nest on this uninhabited island in the south of Chile . The island itself is already very beautiful to see, but the penguins make it a place not to be missed. It is certainly a special experience to see all the penguins here. If you are successful, you will spot dolphins on the way to the island. Isla Magdalena is one of the most special sights of Chile.

The Lake District

The Lake District is also known as the Switzerland of South America. It is a nice quiet area with, of course, many lakes. In the cities in this area you can clearly see the German colonization reflected in the architecture, making it even more like Switzerland. The best way to discover the Lake District is with a rented car.

Atacama desert

This desert is located in the north of Chile. It is the driest place on earth and a large expanse of plain. In some places in the desert it has not rained for centuries. You can visit the village of San Pedro de Atacama which is located in the middle of the desert. In the desert you can take walks or you can sandboard one of the dunes!

As we have now accepted, we will most likely have to stay in or close to the Netherlands next summer . And that’s not as bad as it seems, because there are plenty of beautiful places to discover! However, if you think after a while you have seen everything in your own country, then there may also be the option to take the car and cross the border to our beautiful neighboring country Belgium . That just feels a bit more exotic! The Belgian coastal towns in particular are very beautiful, versatile and perfect for a wonderful holiday by the sea.

Newport

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-13816" src="https://i0.wp.com/luxhotel.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Nieuwpoort.jpg?resize=640%2C427&ssl=1" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" srcset="https://luxhotel.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Nieuwpoort.jpg 1000w, https://luxhotel.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Nieuwpoort-640x427.jpg 640w, https://luxhotel.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Nieuwpoort-320x213.jpg 320w, https://luxhotel.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Nieuwpoort-960x640.jpg 960w" alt="White jetty runs over the water at the beach at Nieuwkerk, Belgium.
Nieuwpoort is known as the best sailing center of all Belgian coastal towns, and is home to one of the largest marinas in the North of Europe . It is a historic destination with a lively center and played a major role in the First World War.
In addition, Nieuwpoort is a real fishing spot and there is still plenty of fishing. In the nearby National Fisheries Museum you can learn and see everything about the fisheries of this area! If you are looking for a combination between modern and old, Nieuwpoort is ideal. Tall apartment buildings alternate with trendy boutiques, cafes and restaurants, and the old center breathes history. In addition, the wide, long beach is of course one of the main attractions. To enjoy!

Ostend

Sunset at the beach near Ostend

This lovely seaside resort on the North Sea offers more than 9 kilometers of beautiful sandy beaches where you can easily spend a few days. Alternate sunbathing and swimming with a lovely walk on the long boulevard, and also discover the bustling center of Ostend. Here you can shop for hours, visit museums, grab some terraces, etc. Ostend used to be a picturesque fishing village, and nowadays a lively mix of old and new. There are plenty of good restaurants and eateries up for grabs, and the green surroundings are perfect for nature trips.

Zeebrugge

The beach at Zeebrugge with the Palace residence in the background

Zeebrugge is also called the fishing city of Belgium, and has a central location on the Belgian coast. This makes it the perfect destination to explore the beautiful surroundings (including the Ardennes). Zeebrugge has Europe’s largest fish market, and the beautiful harbor with its rich history is also famous. There are many luxury hotels here, but there are also affordable options, and the beach is long and wide. Besides this, Zeebrugge has much more to offer. For example, visit the Fisheries Museum, the Russian submarine Foxtrot , and the beautiful Residence Palace. Take a walk along the calm Zeebrugge sea wall, and occasionally stop at a cozy cafe or fish restaurant to rest. When you want to go out, take your bike and ride via a 12-kilometer canal to the historic city of Bruges

Bredene

Long coastline and dunes in Bredene

Bredene is actually nothing like most other coastal towns in Belgium. You will not come across many new buildings here, no luxury resorts, expensive hotels or chain stores. No, you really go to Bredene purely for the peace and quiet, and that is not far to seek on the beautiful wide beach, which is surrounded by high dunes. Due to its central location, Bredene is also very suitable for exploring the vast hinterland. So take your bike or sturdy walking shoes with you when you go here. In addition to the beautiful surroundings, Bredene also offers opportunities for entertainment. The village itself is cute and authentic, and there are a number of good restaurants. Brasserie Duinenhoeve is especially recommended! Pure and traditional, and honest food.

From Breakdown

The beach at De Panne with its colored beach houses

This seaside resort certainly belongs to the category of “most beautiful coastal towns in Belgium”. The white-covered sandy beach is the widest in the whole country, and therefore attracts many visitors. The high idyllic dunes of the Panne, together with those of Dunkirk , were also perfect shelters for the evacuation of British troops during the Second World War. The city is therefore honored with a monument to King Leopold, and an interesting museum from the war. Outside of the historical side, De Panne is just a super beautiful and bustling place to stay. On the boulevard you will find cozy bars, bistros and shops, and in the surrounding countryside you can enjoy walking and cycling. The perfect coastal destination!

Oostduinkerke

The high dunes at Oostduinkerke

This seaside resort is also called Koksijde-Oostduinkerke because of its sub-municipality, and is located on the southwest coast of Belgium. You can experience a wonderful holiday here, between the Hoge Blekker (highest dune on the Flemish coast) and the more than 700 hectares of beautiful nature reserves. In addition, Oostduinkerke is also very artistic and you can be surprised by various works of art and archaeology. Think for example of the Paul Delvaux Museum . Very interesting! for example is a must see for any culture lover. Oostduinkerke also has an authentic fisherman’s life, and you can occasionally see shrimp pickers at work on the beach. Of course you can also enjoy delicious seafood and fresh fish here at one of the cozy restaurants.

Knokke-Heist

The beach of Knokke-heist with the city in the background

This top destination on the Belgian coast has one large beach, which in turn is divided into 5 different beaches. So there is always plenty of choice, and whoever wants can alternate one beach with the other. Besides that, Knokke-Heist is close to a beautiful nature reserve, there are plenty of shops, numerous cultural activities, good outdoor sports facilities, and there is a wonderful mix of cultural diversity. In addition, Knokke-Heist has dozens of art galleries, where art lovers can indulge themselves. A little further from the center, the neighborhoods become a bit more chic, and you will find more trendy and luxurious shops and restaurants.

Almost everyone has heard of it: the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain. This breathtaking area is located in the largest National Park in the country, and for many the rugged nature here is more beautiful than anywhere else in Spain.

Thousands of visitors a year flock to this beautiful place to enjoy all it has to offer. Hiking in the Sierra Nevada in particular is a popular activity, which is the best here! However, it can be difficult to determine where and for how long you want to walk in such a large, versatile area. And what else do you really need to plan? To make it easier for you, here are a few tips to prepare your visit to the Sierra Nevada as best as possible!

Sierra Nevada

Before you leave, think about where you want to go hiking and which hiking routes are possible in this area of the Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada National Park is huge. It covers over 85,883 hectares! So it is not so easy to determine where to start. Good to know is that the Sierra Nevada is spread over two provinces, namely Granada and Almería . The first is the most visited area as it is easier to get to and has the most dramatic scenery.

In the northwest of the Sierra Nevada are super beautiful villages such as Güéjar Sierra, Monachil and Dílar, and this is one of the most beautiful and spectacular parts. Then you also have the beautiful Alpujarras area in the Almeria region. Great hikes also start from here, especially from Capileira in the Poqueira gorge, or Trevélez; the highest village in Spain.

Treveléz, the highest village in Spain

So determine for yourself where it is wise to start in terms of location, and then compare different hiking routes in the Sierra Nevada. You can best estimate for yourself whether you can take an easy, medium or difficult route.

Check which months it is best to plan your visit

In principle, any season, even winter, is fine for hiking in the Sierra Nevada. Keep in mind that the highest peaks are not always accessible in winter due to snow and ice. The sun (almost) always shines in the south of Spain.

However, the Sierra Nevada is located in an area where the weather can change quickly, all year round! In the high season it is not wise to start your hike. It is sometimes so blistering hot that this can really get in the way of the walk. For the most predictable and pleasant weather, visit the Sierra Nevada in the spring or autumn months.

Book your accommodation(s) in the Sierra Nevada (well) in advance

Once you have finally decided in which area you want to start hiking, you also have to ask yourself where you want to spend the night. If you are going on day hikes in the Sierra Nevada, you can simply book a hotel in the village or city from which you start and return. However, if you are going to hike for several days, make sure you book accommodation well in advance (for example, look up the villages you pass and make sure you have some slack with the time).

A nice option is also to spend a few days in different places and get to know different areas that way. If you really want to go back to basics, spend the night in refugios; simple mountain huts, scattered throughout the Sierra Nevada. Often these have wooden bunk beds to sleep on. You will need your own sleeping bag and mat! Wild camping is also allowed in many places in the National Park (according to strict rules).

Think about how you want to explore the Sierra Nevada (transport)

The most flexible way to explore the Sierra Nevada is, as in many cases, by car. Most walks start from places that cannot be reached by public transport. However, there are routes that are accessible by buses (these are often the more popular, and therefore busier hikes). In some cases (one-way walks), it is even more convenient to travel to certain starting points by public transport, because then you don’t have to go through the hassle of collecting your car.

Make sure you have a good map of the area with you

Before you leave, always make sure you buy an extensive map of the area where you are going to hike (preferably of the entire National Park). Some people download the folder via their phone, which is also fine. However, in some cases the range isn’t optimal (or there isn’t any range at all), which you really don’t want when you’re walking around in the middle of nowhere! A compass can also always be useful. In addition, in the Sierra Nevada, various symbols are visible in certain places, indicating routes, directions or points of interest. It’s good to take a picture of this.

Think about whether you want to go alone or with a guide

Mountaineers in the Sierra Nevada

In many cases, you can simply face the rugged mountains and dramatic landscapes of the Sierra Nevada. If you don’t like this and want to have someone with you who is more experienced, consider booking an organized tour and go hiking in the Sierra Nevada with an experienced guide. This can also be a good idea if you want to do winter hikes, or hikes to the extreme areas in the park. In addition, a local mountain guide will of course have a lot of knowledge about the local architecture, geology, fauna and flora. Also super interesting!

Make sure you have good equipment, plenty of water and snacks

Intense sun and heat can cause a lot of discomfort. Even in winter it can still feel very warm in the Sierra Nevada. So water is the key! If you want to drink from a natural water source, take a fast-flowing section of the river. Another option is to use water purification tablets, if you want to drink from a lake, for example.

In many parts of the Sierra Nevada, the ground is uneven and strewn with rocks. Before you know it, you’ll sprain an ankle. So make sure you put on good quality hiking boots when you leave, as well as a sturdy water and wind jacket and zip-off hiking pants (the weather can change quickly, especially in the high-altitude areas).

Finally

As you can see; there are plenty of opportunities to fully enjoy and walk in the breathtaking landscapes of the Sierra Nevada. Discover this beautiful piece of nature in peace, while you are as well prepared as possible!

To be able to walk in the Sierra Nevada it is best to fly from Amsterdam Schiphol to Granada (at the foot of the mountains), and from here you rent a car or take public transport or a taxi. If you are going to visit the other side of the Sierra Nevada, you can fly to Almeria city from Rotterdam Airport. From here you can drive to the National Park in about 45 minutes.
